In the run-up to the World Menstrual Health and Hygiene Day on May 28, city-based Roots Foundation, in collaboration with the Mission for Elimination of Poverty in Municipal Areas (MEPMA), is organising awareness meetings in places where women workers are more in number.
On Saturday, the women workers in a bakery in Autonagar area attended the session meant to educate them on the need to maintain menstrual hygiene.
“It was initiated by the German-based NGO WASH United in 2014 and aims to benefit women and girls worldwide. The 28th day was selected to acknowledge that 28 days is the average length of the menstrual cycle,” said N.N.R. Srinivas, State Mission Director, MEPMA.
Wide reach
He said MEPMA was engaged with 20 lakh women in the State, most of them in their reproductive age group.
The organisation had been organising awareness sessions on women’s issues such as breast and cervical cancer.
Mr. Srinivas said women were known to neglect their health. “It is imperative to observe extreme hygienic conditions during menstruation,” he said.
Founder of Roots Foundation Vijay Bhaskar, Dr. Padmaja and others stressed the need to exercise care while using and discarding sanitary pads.
