Bittersweet workings of fate

Book: Every Breath
Author: Nicholas Spark
Publisher: sphere
Pages: 312; Price: Rs 399

There are times when destiny and love collide. This story is one of them. Whether it’s an adaptation or a book you know what to expect from Nicholas Sparks’ books — dollops of love, hope and dreams, a tinge of sadness and lot of tears. The minutue I held this book I was just too excited to read it, being a huge fan of romantic novels. Several critics have always said not to take Nicholas Sparks’ books too seriously because they level up your expectations and then you are hit by the harsh reality of this world as no character in the book will you find in the world. But the experience wasn’t the same with me. I am not saying what they said is a lie, but I am saying maybe down the line I just got lukcy to have the same kind of a person in my life too. Every Breath stole my heart, because it became so personal that I could live every moment mentioned in it.

It is a touching story of Tru and Hope who are dealing their own problems in life, but fall in love under hopeless circumstances, but fate has something else in store for them. ER trauma nurse Hope Anderson thought that spending a week at her family cottage on Sunset Beach would be a short respite from her troubles. Instead, she meets a man who brings a spark in her life. A man from a different continent, who is facing down his past, is looking for answers regarding his parents. Tru Walls is a 42-year-old safari guide from Zimbabwe. He travels from Zimbabwe to Sunset Beach, North Carolina for the first time to discover his late mother’s early years, after he received a letter from a man who claims to be his biological father. Their paths cross during a chance encounter on the beach, and there is an instant connection between Tru and Hope, which changes their lives forever. But, Hope is divided between her feelings for her boyfriend of six years and Tru, whom she falls in love with.

The story is inspired from a real-life mailbox ‘Kindred Spirit’, which is located on a secluded part of Sunset Beach in North Carolina. Nicholas assures us in his endnotes that it is a real place. The idea of a mail box in the middle of nowhere existing for the sole purpose of people leaving letters filled with the words they can’t, for whatever reason, say or deliver to their intended recipient, is deeply moving. How uplifting, to think that a person could read a letter intended for someone else, but read it at exactly the right time for it to make a profound influence upon their own life or even the idea of using the letterbox to connect to someone who you have lost track of.

Every Breath, Sparks 21st book is a moving love story, about destiny and timing, about never giving up and never letting go. It moves along at a gentle pace, one of those stories that is more about the journey than the big pivotal moments. Tru had always believed that anything was possible when it came to love, that any obstacle could be overcome. Whereas if there was one question Hope could have answered, it was simply this: “Why does love always seem to require sacrifice?”
So, its time you hold your breath, cozy up in your bed and read page after the page to know whether or not it was a happy ending so that your heart is calm and warm!
