Two persons, including the father of an underage bride, were remanded a day after her relatives, led by her father, assaulted Childline staff for rescuing the 15-year-old from Pennagaram.
The accused, Sivalingam and his brother-in-law, were picked up from Manneri past midnight. Sivalingam's daughter was married off stealthily to the son of his sister and the co-accused.
Following an alert, two women staff of Childline rescued the girl from Pavalandur village in Pennagaram. The team, along with the girl, were travelling in a bus to Dharmapuri, when a mob led by her father intercepted them. The women staff were assaulted and the girl dragged out of the bus and taken back by her family. Following a complaint from Childline, a case was registered. Sivalingam, along with the girl, was found in his sister's house in Manneri. The girl’s wedding was held on Friday morning.
Police secured Sivalingam and the girl’s uncle. She was handed over to the Child Welfare Committee.
The accused were remanded under Sections 341 (wrongful confinement), 323 (causing hurt) and 332 (causing hurt to deter a public servant from duty) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
