Vadodara/ Anand: Nearly 78.8% voting was recorded during repolling at one booth in Dharmaj town of Anand district on Sunday.
The repolling at the booth which comes under Sojitra assembly seat had started at 7am. The day witnessed some heated arguments when a female voter alleged that somebody else had cast vote in her place. Later, however, it came to light that there was confusion because of similarity in the names of the voter and the female was allowed to cast her vote.
The Election Commission of India (ECI) had ordered repolling at the booth after it became evident that bogus voting had taken place there. Earlier, as many as 621 votes had been cast at the booth which has 894 votes in all.
ECI had taken the decision after Anand district election officer and observers submitted a report regarding the incident.
The bogus voting had come to the notice when the election officials examined the video footage of the booth. The footage of booth number 239 in Dharmaj that was identified as a critical booth had shown how one person had cast a vote four to five times.
Anand Lok Sabha seat is a high-profile seat in Gujarat as former union minister and former Gujarat Congress president Bharatsinh Solanki is contesting against businessman Mitesh Patel of the BJP.
