Vadodara: The Sanskarinagri is known to be one of the safest in the state. But the city has earned a dubious distinction when it comes to burglaries.
Vadodara has earlier earned the ignominious tag of Gujarat’s burglary capital due to the high rate of burglaries that happen here.
According to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), the city has been highest average burglary rate per one lakh population in the state, surpassing even Ahmedabad that is much bigger in size and population than Vadodara. In 2013 and 2015, the city had average burglary rate of 23.2 and 16 per one lakh population respectively. The rate was almost double than Ahmedabad and it even surpassed the national average.
Police said that the city’s location is one of the reasons for such high number of burglaries. “The city shares border with Madhya Pradesh so criminals from that state often commit crimes here and return. It becomes difficult to trace them,” the police said. According to senior police officials, many of such burglary gangs often enter the city under the garb of labourers.
“They enter the city in day time and do recce of their targets. As the sun sets, the burglars break into homes or shops, steal valuables and then wait at some isolated dark spot till it dawns. They then leave for their home town,” a police official added. The chaddi-banyan dhaari (CBD) and Sikhligar are the most notorious gangs that operate in the city.
The police have already placed a latitude-longitude system wherein the areas that are targeted by burglars are mapped for better policing.
