The Election Commission has censured BJP leader Giriraj Singh for making statements that had the “undertone and propensity to polarise the elections”.

Taking cognisance of his public address on April 24 in Bihar’s Begusarai, from where he contested the Lok Sabha poll, the EC said he had made an objectionable speech. It said his utterances had the tone and tenor of aggravating existing differences, or creating mutual hatred, between different religious communities and therefore, they violated the model code of conduct.

The EC warned Mr. Singh to “remain careful in his public utterances during the currency of the model code of conduct”.
