The Indian Premier League final between Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings seemed done and dusted when Quinton de Kock failed to gather a delivery from Jasprit Bumrah on the last ball of the 19th over in Hyderabad on Sunday. The ball ran away for four byes and the Chennai Super Kings were left with a gettable equation of 9 runs from 6 balls. ((Full Scorecard))

Rohit Sharma threw the ball to Lasith Malinga, who had conceded 42 runs in three overs and hadn’t picked up wicket until then. But Malinga, who has bowled many pressure overs in his career, took up the challenge.

The fast bowler got his famed yorker spot-on in the first ball of the last over as Shane Watson took a single. Ravindra Jadeja sneaked a single in the next ball as the equation was reduced to 7 runs from 4 balls.

Malinga bowled a perfect low full toss as Watson managed a couple in the third ball. Chennai needed 5 from 3 balls. In the next ball, Malinga bowled a brilliant wide yorker as Watson got run out while trying to steal a second run.

Shardul Thakur kept Chennai Super Kings in the game by taking a double off the penultimate ball.

Then, Malinga wrapped up the match by trapping Thakur LBW with a slow off-cutter. The Mumbai Indians clinched victory by one run and lifted their fourth IPL title, the most by any team in history.

Lasith Malinga summed up the moment brilliantly after the match, he said:

“If we conceded one run, then we wouldn’t win, and I wanted to win so I got the wicket - quite simple.”

Earlier, the Chennai Super Kings bowled extremely well to restrict the Mumbai Indians to 149/8 in 20 overs. Deepak Chahar was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 3/26.
