A Class XII student committed suicide on Friday by allegedly jumping off the eighth floor of a shopping mall on Harmu Road, police said. The deceased was identified as Aditi Kumari (17), resident of Indrapuri, and a former student of DAV Gandhi Nagar.

Sanjiv Kumar, officer-in-charge (OC) of Sukhdeo Nagar police station, said that the parents of the girl had registered a missing complaint on Friday morning. As per the complaint, the girl had left her house in the morning, around 6 am on a two-wheeler. She was upset for scoring poor marks in her Class XII examinations, Kumar said.

“During investigation, the police traced her mobile location near the mall. By the time the police, along with the girl’s parents reached the spot, she had already committed suicide. No suicide note was recovered near the body,” the officer said.

Quoting the statement of family members, the police said that Aditi was depressed because of scoring 12 in her mathematics paper in Class XII exams. She had given an improvement exam in 2019 as she had scored low mark in the examinations held last year. Although Aditi was declared to have overall secured pass marks in the exams, she was distressed because of her poor marks in mathematics.

Rajesh Kumar, Aditi’s father, denied that he scolded her daughter for her poor marks in mathematics. He said the family was unable to fathom as to why she took the extreme step.

Police said that a case of unnatural death was registered, and the body was sent for autopsy to the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences.
