NU starts preparations for PG courses CAP

Nagpur: Even as Maharashtra government is yet to come out with its standard guidelines for conducting centralized admission process (CAP), Nagpur University has started making its own arrangements for the same. Pro vice-chancellor, who is looking after the process, has started conducting meetings with the admissions and prospectus committees.
The state department of higher and technical education had decided to centralize undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) admissions in all traditional universities last year. Though NU was waiting for the government’s instructions in this regard, there’s no communication from it. Even last year, the government kept all universities waiting till June, after which they resorted to their own arrangements for conducting admissions.
NU, however, had already started its own CAP for conducting admissions for its PG departments in 2017. Based on that experiment, it successfully held CAP not only for its departments, but also for its various affiliated colleges. Significantly, entire process was conducted online.
“After successfully conducting the centralized admissions last year, we’re fully prepared to repeat it this year as well. Of course, we will abide by the government’s instructions if it issues common guidelines, but we want to be fully prepared, in case those aren’t issued,” Yeole, who’s brain behind entire concept, told TOI.
He, however, clarified that the NU would restrict the CAP to PG admissions only, as conducting it for UG courses would be a tedious process considering the high number of affiliated colleges. The admissions under CAP would commence after declaration of all UG results, most probably towards third week of next month.

NU is among a few universities which are successfully conducting the CAP for its various courses. Taking a cue from it, Amravati University has sought NU’s help to implement the process. “AU VC Murlidhar Chandekar had called me to take details of the procedure and how it was conducted last year. They plan to start the CAP this year. We’re providing them all help,” Yeole said.
NU has made it mandatory for all affiliated colleges to admit students through CAP, despite strong opposition. Its objective was to ensure transparency in admissions and curb illegal means through which the colleges charge exorbitant fees from students in the form of donation.
