Officials told to publish electoral rolls by May 20

After the general elections, political parties are now gearing up for polls to the Urban Local Bodies.

The term of council of the Guntur Municipal Corporation expired in the year 2010 and since then, the GMC is being administered by the Special Officer. In other municipalities, the elections were held in 2014, just before the general elections and the term of existing council is set to end in July 2019.

The local body administration is now taking up the massive exercise of publishing the electoral rolls, and began the process of reserving the seats. The process of publishing voters’ list would be completed in the second week of May, a bit longer than the actual deadline of April 30.

In Guntur district, there are 31.74 lakh voters, and in some municipalities, the revision of voters lists is yet to be completed. In municipalities such as Tadepalli and Vinukonda, which had been upgraded from Grade-3 to Grade-2, the ULBs have started delimitation of wards.

The total voters in all ULBs now stands at 6.70 lakh, which are divided among 371 wards and with the elections round the corner, political parties are bracing up for yet another battle.

Deadline extended

Meanwhile, the State Election Commission has extended the deadline to publish electoral rolls of gram panchayats to May 20 after it was found that the process had not been completed in many districts.
