6 months after the Camp Fire: Orland Shelters Survivors

In state history.

### ll: the city of orland is known for its honeybees and small town charm, but it's also home to some 400 camp fire survivors...and some of them live here at the fairgrounds, right behind me.

Life will go on.

You could call larry vandeutekom (van-doo-deh- kom) an eternal optimist of sorts.

It might be bad now, but you hope for the best.

The concow man lives inside one of 25 fema trailers parked at the glenn county fairgrounds.

He survived not just the camp fire... which happened on his birthday... but also hurricane katrina.

Reporter: talk about resilience, you're still here.

Larry: haha, yes and i always have a smile.

But there's one thing larry says he and others in his position struggle with: permanent housing.

People expect you to pay three times the amount of rent, and me being on disability, just doesn't cut it.

After the shock of watching this happen.

You kinda knew, uh-oh.

There's a lot of people&where's everybody going to go?

Orland's mayor remembers when the fire forced survivors into his city.

Our town, is small town america.

And there are good samartians, open arms, willing to help.

By the second week in december, space was set aside for 77 trailers at two properties inside the town.

Here's a map of those locations.

We really welcome construction of more homes in town as well.

Orland is the only city outside of butte county to join gridley, oroville and biggs to endorse assembly bill 430, which would relax certain requirements and allow for construction of new housing in camp fire affected cities.

We do have open space here in town.

The city planner adds there are 33 additional chip homes for low- income families, under construction.

That project is expected to be done in december this year.

Just, gotta keep going can't step back.

Back at the fairgrounds, larry says he's just $400 shy of renting out a more permanent solution.

His time in the fema trailer ends next month.

Gotta keep chugging along.

#### orland's population is now at roughly 83-hundred people.

And..

The mayor tells us there have been very few complaints and reports of crime.
