Police suspect suicide, no note found in the house

In what is suspected to have been a suicide pact, a 42-year-old woman and her 25-year-old son were found dead at their Virar residence on Friday night.

According to the Virar police, Saraswati and Vinay Chogale were residents of Sai Heritage building. On Friday, their neighbours noticed a foul smell coming from the house. When repeated knocking on the door elicited no response, the neighbours broke open the door and found both of them lying on the floor, with foam coming out of their mouths. The mother and son were rushed to Civil Hospital in Virar, where they were declared dead before admission.

“We received information about the incident from Vinay’s uncle Ashok, who called us after the two were taken to the hospital. There are no signs of forced entry into the house, indicating that their deaths were a suicide. We are still awaiting post-mortem and forensic examination reports,” assistant police inspector Ranjithsing Pardeshi, Virar police station, said.

He said inquiries will be made with family members and friends after they have recovered from the shock and completed the last rites. The bodies were cremated at a local cremation ground on Saturday afternoon.

The police said Vinay, whose father passed away five years ago, used to work in a private firm, while his mother was a homemaker. Vinay has an elder brother, who lives in Virar.

No suicide note was found in the house, and the reason for their extreme step is still not clear. The police have registered accidental death reports and are conducting further inquiries.
