Mare proves a Yankee doodle dandy for Gai with Dark Jewel con job
With a final surge, American mare Con Te Partiro began her racing life in Australia a winner in the Dark Jewel Stakes at Scone on Saturday.
After being under riding at 600m and looking beaten at the 200m, Con Te Partiro surprised Sam Clipperton when she dug deep and squeezed between Godolphin pair Savatiano and Organza to win the group 3.
“That last 100 metres was unbelievable,” Clipperton said. ‘‘I thought she was gone at the 200m and then she found another five gears and really savaged the line.”
It was a first Australian win for the red-and-black silks of SF Investments and Newgate Farm, which brought the Royal Ascot winning Scat Daddy mare for $575,000 last year to go to Russian Revolution this season.
Waterhouse has learned since Con Te Partiro arrived at Tulloch Lodge four months that she has a big personality and ability to match.
“She has been so quirksome. I thought she would either blow her brain in the mounting yard or she would win,” Waterhouse said.
“Full credit to the boys and girls with her because they got her to stand quietly and then walked and walked and walked her. Then she just did it on the track.”
Trekking on
Godolphin have group 1 ambitions for Trekking and Viridine after impressive wins at Scone on Saturday. Trekking, which loves a dry track, appreciated a hot speed set by Deploy in the Luskin Star Stakes and sailed down the centre to score.
Trekking might head to the Stradbroke but the group 1 goal for Viridine could be more immediate with the Kingsford Smith Stakes on his radar.
Jason Collett settled Virdine in the second half of the field before letting down to nab Victorem, which will head to the weight-for-age group 1 as well.
‘‘He has that acceleration to be a weight-for-age horse,’’ Beadman said. ‘‘He can produce a big sprint off a good speed and it was good to see him do that.’’
Adam’s apples
The biggest hint to how well Ready To Prophet was going was that Adam Hyeronimus got to 53kg to win the Denise’s Joy Stakes at Scone.
The jockey was pale as he came back after lifting Ready To Prophet to victory from Madame Rogue.
“The way she has been at home, I just had to ride her,” Hyeronimus said with a can of soft drink in his hand after weigh-in. “She has come back a very good filly and she can go to Brisbane now after that win and keep going. She was very strong at the end despite a wide run.”
Gai Waterhouse said Ready To Prophet would continue up the highway to Brisbane and might head towards the Dane Ripper Stakes and Tatt’s Tiara.
“These fillies are targeting Brisbane. They come here and then go up there and keep winning,” Waterhouse said. “She is only going to get better.”
David Pfieffer could only wonder what might have been with Prophet’s Thumb, which was dragged back to last in the straight before charging in third.
“He just picked the wrong horse to follow at a crucial stage,” Pfieffer said. “He stays on Madame Rougue’s back he wins. Instead she got taken out of the race.”
Gwenda on a roll
Archedemus is poised to give Gwenda Markwell and owner-breeder Ross Williams a second assault on a group 1 in as many months after Archedemus ran his rivals ragged in the listed Members’ Handicap at Doomben.
The Hawkesbury Cup winner led from barrier to box to stave off Tom Melbourne, who ran second for the 13th time in his career. Corey Brown, who combined with the Markwell-trained Angel Of Truth to win the Australian Derby last month, let Archedemus roll and he never looked like being headed as favourite Gem Song laboured in third.
‘‘I’m so proud of the horse,’’ Williams said. ‘‘He’s been through a tough life and he’s a five-year-old with not many starts. I’ve looked after him and he’s repaying it now. He really should be seven from nine because he didn’t come out of the gates in one start. We might be backing him up next week for the cup. It will be a lot tougher than today, but you’ve got to be in it to win it. He hasn’t really reached his peak yet.’’
Archedemus was quickly slashed to a $6 second favourite with BetEasy for the Doomben Cup, trailing only Youngstar.
