AHMEDABAD: After the implementation of the 10%
quota for the economically weaker sections (
EWS) among forward castes, an additional 5,000 seats will be available in engineering courses across the state. Interestingly, more than half of the state’s 60,000-odd existing engineering seats are likely to remain vacant this year. More than 33,000 seats went vacant.
The procedure for admissions to engineering colleges in the state will begin on May 20, while admission for pharmacy courses will begin on May 21. A new degree engineering college at Gandhinagar has been approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE).
Three engineering colleges will begin new academic courses this year. These courses include information and communication technology (ICT), information technology (IT) and computer engineering. With 60 seats for each course, 180 new seats will be on offer this year.
As of now, there are 60,937 seats at 137 engineering colleges in the state. The central government has asked the
Gujarat government to draw up its own guidelines for the additional 10% EWS quota will be implemented at engineering colleges.
