The quake struck at 8.48am local time. The earthquake struck at a shallow depth of 20km, and followed a 5.6-magnitude quake one hour earlier.
Moderate to strong shaking was felt in areas near the epicentre off the coast of Miyazaki, a city in the southwest of Kyushu island, local reports quoted the meteorological agency as saying.
No tsunami warning was issued and there were no immediate reports of damage due to the quake.
Japan sits on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, where many of the world’s earthquakes and volcanic eruptions are recorded.
