The police, on Friday, arrested a 25-year-old tailor for allegedly bludgeoning a 33-year-old labourer to death on May 7.

According to the police, the incident took place following an altercation between the suspect and the victim, when the latter was passing through his lane near marble market in DLF Phase-1. The suspect had killed the man and dumped his body in a vacant land adjacent to his rented room, said the police.

The suspect has been identified as Manoj Kumar, a native of Banda in Uttar Pradesh. He was living in a rented room in Sirhaul in Sector 18 for the last one year.

According to the police on May 7, Kumar was returning to his rented room from a gambling den in DLF Phase-1 slum area. The police said he was in an inebriated state when the incident took place.

The victim, Gabbar Singh, was having drinks outside his room and objected to Kumar crossing the stretch of the lane, as it was connected to his room. Soon an altercation followed, after which Kumar picked up a stone lying nearby and allegedly bludgeoned Singh to death.

The police said the accused fled from the spot fearing police action. However, while fleeing, he took the victim’s mobile phone, earphones and wallet along with him.

Karan Goyal, assistant commissioner of police (DLF), said we were able to trace the location of the suspect when he switched on the mobile phone of the victim.

We formed six different teams which were assigned the task of tracking the suspect. “The accused was at home when the team reached the spot and arrested him. The police also recovered from the spot the mobile phone and headphones of the victim,” he said.

The suspect was produced before the court on Saturday. He was later shifted to police custody for two days.

Kumar was a habitual drinker and used to work in a circus some years ago. He had recently taken up stitching and was a trained tailor. However, he was always short of money due to his drinking and gambling habits . He used to supplement his income by working as a daily wage labourer .

The victim, Gabbar Singh, a native of Chitrakoot in Uttar Pradesh, was found dead on Wednesday around 7am. The police had recovered liquor bottles, beedi (traditionally rolled tobacco), plastic glasses and leftover food from the spot, suggesting that he was consuming alcohol and had company before being killed.
