MANGALURU: A tusker, which had injured its left leg, due to suspected territorial fight, was treated with help of
expert veterinarians, at Balugodu Reserve Forest in
Subrahmanya limits.
About a week ago, the forest officials had noticed a tusker aged between 15-16 years, limping in around the forest territory. “We cannot tranquilise and sedate the tusker since it was straying in
sloppy area. If we do so, there are chances, it may roll from the spot. We waited till it moves to a good location and kept observing the jumbo. On Friday, it moved to area we wanted to. It was tranquilised and fell on the ground. The veterinarians—one from Subrahmanya and another from
Nagarahole Reserve Park provided the treatment,” informed
V Karikalan, deputy conservator of forest, DK.
Quoting veterinarians, DFO said that the tusker being continuously monitored by the forest staff, may have suffered dislocation in its joint. As a result it's leg was swollen. Veterinarians have cleared it and given high dosage of anti-biotics. Since it is a very young tusker, chances are high that it will be healed at the earliest. Forest officials are also feeding the jumbo. “If it (tusker) does not get recovery in a week, we will think about next action,” added Karikalan.
