Rail officials mull ways to curb thefts in moving trains

Coimbatore: Following multiple robbery incidents in moving trains, railway DGP C Sylendra Babu held a meeting with railway police officials on PRS ground in the city on Saturday.
At the meeting, officials discussed ways to enhance safety of passengers in moving trains and to prevent robbery incidents in future.
On May 5 and May 6, more than 31 sovereigns gold were robbed from rail passengers at Sankagiri near Salem and subsequently, five special teams were formed to find the accused. The special teams have been visiting other states such as Kerala, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Uttar Pradesh regarding the case, a railway source said.

More than 10 train passengers have registered theft complaints so far, the source said, adding, railway officials have been inquiring whether any old offenders were involved in the cases or new offenders were behind them.
In case of emergency, railway passengers could reach the authorities by dialling helpline number 1512.
