Deccan Queen may keep its dining car in upgrade

A special coach comprising an AC dining car and a pantry car will be built
PUNE: The Central Railway has said the 89-year-old Deccan Queen, which is set for a major revamp, will maintain its original character which includes its dining car. The rail officials said the revamp will reduce travel time between Pune and Mumbai by an hour.

“The Central Railway has sent the request for a dining car while switching over to Linke Hoffman Busch (LHB) rakes along with the executive chair car,” a senior official told TOI.
“The new rakes will allow the train to complete the journey between Mumbai and Pune in 2 hours and 30 minutes. At present, the train takes 3 hours and 10 minutes to cover the distance,” a senior official requesting anonymity told TOI.
The official said they have had a detailed discussion with the railway board about the dining car. A letter has been sent in March to the board by the principal chief mechanical engineer. Central Railway’s general manager D K Sharma has spoken with the railway board authorities about the dining car, the official added.
The letter said the train will enter its 90th year on June 1 and LHB rakes would be advantageous.
Based on the deep emotional connect and the Central Railway’s previous experience of significant customer complaints following upgrades, opinions of the Deccan Queen’s commuters had been sought.
There was strong customer feedback about the dining car, a unique feature of the train. Commuters said it should stay in the upgraded version.

For this, a special coach comprising an AC dining car (half a coach) and a pantry car (half a coach) will be built.
Harsha Shah, president of Railway Pravasi Group said the dining car was an integral part of Deccan Queen and should not be removed.
