Greater Noida: A 40-year-old woman and her 14-year-old niece died after a truck hit the
SUV in which they were travelling from
Alwar and overturned on the car on
Yamuna Expressway on Friday morning. Police said five people were travelling in the XUV 500 to Delhi when the
accident happened near
Rabupura around 3.30am.
The passengers of the SUV and the
truck driver were taken to Kailash Hospital, where the woman and the girl were declared dead on arrival. The deceased have been identified as Beena (32) and her niece Rekha (14).
They were travelling with Bhagwan Singh (40) and two other children, Pragyan (5) and Tanvi (8). The truck driver is a Delhi resident, Pappu (40). Preliminary investigation has revealed that the truck hit the SUV from behind at around 80kmph. As the truck driver tried to screech to a halt, the heavy vehicle lost balance and overturned on the SUV. While the family was returning from a wedding in Alwar, the truck was ferrying mangoes from Vijayawada to Delhi.
“We received information about the accident from a passerby. A police team was immediately sent to the spot and the victims were brought out after cutting open the car.
They were rushed to the nearby Kailash Hospital in Kasna, where Beena and Rekha were declared dead on arrival. Bhagwan Das was admitted with critical injuries.
Pragyan and Tanvi were given first-aid and discharged. The truck driver is also admitted in the ICU with critical injuries,” said Ashok Venkatesh, the station house officer of Rabupura police station. The officer added that the accident could have happened because the truck driver apparently dozed off.
“Prima facie, it seems that the car was moving at a slow speed on the expressway. The truck driver, who is believed to have dozed off, failed to notice the car and ended up hitting it from behind. After the collision, the truck driver lost balance and the loaded vehicle overturned on the car,” Venkatesh said.
The truck driver has been booked on a
complaint by a relative of the deceased under sections 304 A (death by negligence), 279 (rash driving), 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) and 427 (mischief) of the
IPC.
