A 38-year-old employee of a jeweller in Bihar was allegedly assaulted, stabbed and robbed of his backpack and travel money belt containing jewellery worth around ₹1.5 crore by a group of four or five men in a moving train between Sadar Bazaar and New Delhi railways stations on Thursday evening, the police said.

The man, Lal Babu Yadav, suffered stab wounds on his ear, nose, shoulder, abdomen, and head when the assailants attacked him with knives and a pistol’s butt for resisting. He was travelling in a local train to reach New Delhi railway station from where he had to board a train for his hometown in Bihar, the police said.

Deputy commissioner of police (railways) Dinesh Kumar Gupta said a case of voluntarily causing hurt in committing robbery under IPC Section 394 was lodged at New Delhi railway police station. “We are verifying facts and trying to ascertain sequence of events. Teams have been formed to probe the case. Yadav travelled in a local train to prevent frisking,” he said.

Police said Yadav works at jewellery store in Siwan and was employed by its owner Nirbhay. They said he buys jewellery from shops in Delhi’s Chandni Chowk twice a month and takes it to Nirbhay’s shop.

An officer said Yadav collected more than three kilograms gold jewellery from Chandni Chowk. “Four or five men, cornered him and asked him to hand over the jewellery. When he resisted, they stabbed him and hit his head. Yadav claims many passengers witnessed the crime but noone helped him. The robbers fled with his backpack and the travel belt,” the officer said.

Police said Yadav went to one of the shops from where he had bought jewellery and asked the shopkeeper to take him to a hospital. He admitted him to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital. “The crime came to light when the shopkeeper asked Yadav about the jewellery, and he narrated the incident, who then informed us,” he added.
