A 24-year-old man was allegedly duped of Rs2.7 lakh by an acquaintance who promised him a job in the Indian Railways. The victim, identified only by first name Mohit, filed a complaint against the suspect, Akshay, at Sector 9A police station on Thursday, police said.

According to the police, Akshay had told Mohit that he would be able to get him recruited as a loco-pilot technician in the Raiways and that the process would cost Rs7 lakh. Akshay had assured the victim that he would tamper with the entrance exam results and help him qualify, the police said.

Mohit, who hails from Rohtak, said he was a class 12 graduate and had been looking for a job for many years. He added that Akshay was a family friend whom he had met in Gurugram.

“When Akshay promised me a job as a loco-pilot technician, I transferred Rs3.5 lakh in his bank account on January 7. But when the results of the entrance exam came out, I saw that I had not qualified for the post. On asking him to return the advance payment, he returned Rs80,000 in March, but refused to return the rest of the money,” Mohit said in his first information report.

“We are investigating the case. The suspect is yet to be arrested,” Inspector Basant Chauhan of the Sector 9A police station said, adding that the police are trying to trace the suspect’s bank account.

A case was registered against Akshay, on Thursday, under sections 406 (criminal breach of trust) and 420 (cheating) of the Indian Penal Code at Sector 9A police station.
