It may be a newcomer to the premium subcompact SUV segment, but the Cadillac XT4 aims straight for the more established models such as the BMW X1, Mercedes-Benz GLA, Audi Q3, Volvo XC40 and many more.

Stylistically, it takes after the brand’s larger SUVs up to a point and adds its own twists, has a nicely-made cabin with plenty of soft-touch surfaces, a modern design and an infotainment system that’s integrated into the middle of the dashboard.

Even the base model, called Luxury, offers sufficient gear. It starts from $34,795 and comes with 18-inch wheels, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, audio system and Rear Park Assist. The Premium Luxury carries a $4,500 premium and adds illuminated door handles, satin aluminum roof rails and side window surrounds, Lane Change Alert with Side Blind Zone Alert, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Safety Alert Seat and Front and Rear Park Assist. The Sport has an identical MSRP and equipment, and any changes are just visual.

Regardless of the trim level, there is but a single engine choice: a 2.0-liter four-pot develops 237 hp (240 PS / 177 kW) and 258 lb-ft (350 Nm) of torque and is matched to a nine-speed automatic transmission.

After purchasing the mid-range model, equipped with several optional extras that have brought the price to $49,430, Consumer Reports said the engine delivers enough punch. Handling is another strong point, as the 2019 XT4 felt nimble and secure on their course.

If you expect it to be more comfortable than most of its rivals just because it’s a Caddy, then you’ll be disappointed to find out that’s not the case, as even with the standard wheels, the ride quality is anything but smooth.
