MUMBAI: The BMC commissioner Ajoy Mehta has been appointed as Maharashtra's new chief secretary. An official order regarding the same is expected to be issued by Friday afternoon and Mehta would take charge after that.

With the poll code of conduct in place due to ongoing Lok Sabha elections in the country, Mehta's appointment has been approved by the Election Commission.

The current chief secretary UPS Madan has opted for voluntary retirement.

Mehta, a 1984 batch officer will retire in September. He would have missed out on the CS post if Madan would have continued as he was to retire in October this year.

"This will effect a turn in the bureaucracy. The name of the next municipal commissioner will be announced soon," said an official.

Additional chief secretary Praveen Pardeshi is the front runner for the post of the BMC commissioner.
