Malaysia tourism receipts 2018 hit record high despite less tourist arrivals

According to Maybank Investment Bank Bhd Reseach (Maybank IB Research), the 2018 tourism receipts per capita also hit a record high of RM3,300, a three per cent growth from the previous year.

However, the report also said that last year’s tourism performance showed visitor arrivals and tourism receipts were not necessarily perfectly correlated. This was primarily due to the fewer visitor arrivals from Singapore and the recovering of the ringgit against the Singapore dollar.

“The above is thanks to the weaker ringgit and partially due to more Chinese visitors of whom average Chinese visitor to Malaysia spends MYR4,200, more than any other major source of visitors,” Maybank IB Research said in its 2019 ASEAN Tourism Report released in Singapore today (May 10).

Again, despite the overall ease of tourist arrivals last year, tourist arrivals from China hit a record high of 2.9 million in 2018, a growth of 29 per cent from 2017.
