The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court ordered notice to the Centre while hearing a public interest litigation petition that sought filling of vacancies to key posts in the Chennai regional office of the National Commission for Scheduled Castes.

A Division Bench of Justices G. R. Swaminathan and M. Dhandapani ordered notice to the Department of Social Justice and Empowerment and adjourned hearing.

The petitioner, S. Karuppaiah, pointed out that key posts that included Director, Research Officer and Investigating Officer were currently lying vacant. He further pointed out that the situation was similar in 12 other regional offices. The vacancies would defeat the purpose of the Commission, he said.
