A mother was left horrified after spotting a man allegedly sexually assaulting her 10-year-old daughter in the middle of a street.

The woman saw the alleged assault while driving through a street in Palmerston, in the Northern Territory, on Friday.

She followed the man to his home before contacting police, NT News reported.

The 58-year-old man has been taken into custody and is expected to be charged with indecent assault.

'We have no information to suggest this is linked to any other matters,' a police spokesman said.
