Suguna Vilasa Sabha, with a tradition of 128 years, will hold an open snooker tournament (SVS Open) at the Crucible Billiards Hall in its premises from May 10.

“We had to restrict entries. The tournament is conducted under the auspices of Tamil Nadu Billiards and Snooker Association. Leading snooker players in India including Yogesh Kumar, Anuj Uppal, Railways players like Rafath Habib, Girish, Arvind Kumar, Pandurangaiah, Faisal Khan, Dilip Kumar, Nitesh Madan, Venkatesham, Peter Paul will be seen in action,” said Ganesh in a press conference.
Tamil Nadu is represented by Prem Prakash, SA Saleem, Varun Kumar, Mustaq, Naveen, S Shrikrishna, R Loganathan, Prabhu and Vijay Nichani among others. Shrikrishna is seeded fourth behind top seed Yogesh Kumar (Karnataka), Girish and Pandurangaiah (both Railways).
“Being a gender neutral sport, the tournament witnesses Neena Praveen, R Anupama and S Manasvini from Tamil Nadu. There are more than 34 outstation entries, from places like New Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Karnataka in addition to Madurai, Salem, Coimbatore, Erode, Karur and Dharmapuri.”
The tournament is a 15-red snooker, knockout format of 128 players. Till the round of 64, it would be played over best-of-five frames. The round of 32 and prequarter-finals would be best of seven frames. The quarter-finals and the semi-finals would be best of nine frames. The final will be played over 11 frames on May 21.
As an innovative initiative and to encourage big breaks, three top highest breaks above 100+ will be given prize money of Rs 5000, Rs 3000 and Rs 2000 respectively. The winner takes home Rs 60,000 and the runner-up Rs 30,000. Semi-finalists get Rs 15,000 each. The Crucible has two tables and can seat about 30 spectators in addition to the players.
SVS Club members and snooker players, M Rajendran and Vinay Kothari, are jointly holding the SVS Club Open Snooker Tournament in memory of their respective fathers, the late N Manimaran and the late Kishan Kothari.
