Robert Downey Jr has shared behind-the-scenes pictures of the final scene he shot for Avengers: Endgame (and the Marvel Cinematic Universe) - the iconic ‘I am Iron Man’ moment.
Avengers Infinity War Updated: May 10, 2019 19:05 ISTActor Robert Downey Jr has shared a series of behind-scenes-images of the iconic ‘I am Iron Man’ moment from Avengers: Endgame on Instagram. “In the still of the night...” he captioned the pictures, which could be screenshots from a video.
The pictures show Downey Jr in close-up, as he snaps his fingers and reverses the catastrophic events of Avengers: Infinity War. It is his final act of heroism in the series, as he succumbs to his injuries shortly afterwards, surrounded by friends and family.
Worth pointing out is that the Gauntlet on Tony Stark’s arm seems to have been an entirely CGI creation; Downey Jr snaps his actual fingers in these images.
Directors Joe and Anthony Russo in recent interviews said that the scene was the final thing they shot for the film, after their editor had the brainwave of having Tony say the iconic line. Earlier versions of the scene showed Tony simply snapping his fingers, but not responding to Thanos’ line, ‘I am inevitable’. The Russos said that Downey Jr had to be convinced to return to film the shot, which they got in January, 2019, mere months before the film was released.
Co-director Joe Russo told CinemaBlend, “It’s an interesting story. I had dinner with (Robert Downey Jr.) like two weeks before we were supposed to shoot it. And he was like, ‘I don’t know. I don’t really want to go back and get into that emotional state. It’ll take… it’s hard.’ And crazily enough, Joel Silver, the producer, was at the dinner. He’s an old buddy of Robert’s. And Joel jumps in and he’s like, ‘Robert, what are you talking about? That’s the greatest line I’ve ever heard! You gotta say this line! You have to do this!’ So thank God that Joel Silver was at dinner, because he helped us talk Robert into doing that line.”
Downey Jr has played Tony Stark/Iron Man in several Marvel Cinematic Universe movies, beginning with 2008’s Iron Man. The films have helped him go from being almost uninsurable to being one of the highest paid actors in the world.
