BJP president Amit Shah, in his assertion that the NDA will better its 2014 performance, seems to ignore the ground realities (“We will increase seats, improve our margins of victory and expand,” May 10). Opposition alliances in U.P., Karnataka and Maharashtra are new in this election. Even if anti-incumbency is marginal, it could affect the NDA’s vote share and seat share. The BJP’s uneasy alliance with the Shiv Sena is not going to improve its tally in Maharashtra. Mr. Modi is not able to create the awe that he could in the last general election. That is why he is busy talking about Rajiv Gandhi.
