The president and first lady were honoring military mothers ahead of Sunday's Mothers Day.
'Motherhood is a blessing in its rawest form,' Melania Trump, wearing an ivory sheath dress, told the audience of moms, some of whom had children with them.
She said mothers should be celebrated every day.
'Because of the sacrifices made by your sons, husbands, daughters and wives, we and our children enjoy the security and freedom to raise our children in the greatest country in the world,' she added.
Melania, mother to 13-year-old Barron, has said her first priority in the White House is her son.
'It's a balancing act and my son - our son - is still a priority. So I feel I am still a mother first. He is at an age where he needs parents for guidance,' she told middle schoolers at Fort Bragg last month.
The first lady often arranges her schedule around her son's school.
'As a mother myself, I can relate to all the mothers,' she said Friday at the White House. 'The love between a mother and child strengthens us, helps us grown and provides a deeper meaning to all our lives.'
Trump, who gave his wife a kiss on the cheek and thanked her for organizing the event, said 'military mothers are the backbone of America.'
'Great job and thank you very much,' he said. 'Melania you did a great job of organizing this great celebration of military mothers.'
