Nagpur: The Indian Institute of Management Nagpur (IIM-N) has introduced 10% reservation for economically weaker sections (EWS) in general category in higher education for its 2019 intake as per central government’s decision.
Nagpur is among only a handful of IIMs to have incorporated the scheme so far.
The criteria for a candidate to be categorized as economically weaker are specified by the Centre (see box).
With this, the intake for 2019-21 batch has been increased to 130. However, the IIM-N would admit only four students under the new quota.
In 2015, the premier B-school had started with an intake of 60 which was hiked to 120 during the 2018-19 batch. Now, of the 130 seats, 60 are under open, 36 NC-OBC, 20 SC, 10 ST, and 4 EWS. Seven seats for differently-abled persons have been reserved across each category.
“We began implementing the scheme by increasing our intake to only 130 for the year 2019-20 on account of infrastructure constraints. However, we will implement the full 10% quota by the following year, 2020-21, in accordance with government guidelines,” said IIM-N director Prof LS Murty.
IIM-N is running from a makeshift campus at Bajaj Nagar-based Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology (VNIT). It plans to shift to a bigger new campus in Mihan-SEZ from next academic year.
While the Centre has directed all government undertakings and centrally-funded educational institutions to implement this quota as per 124th amendment to the Constitution, standards for the implementation for the same in educational institutes have yet to be formulated.
To facilitate the same, IIM-N has provided shortlisted candidates with a format that allows them to detail their family income and assets, in order to be considered under the EWS quota. Elaborate guidelines for submitting information validated by competent authorities have been conveyed to the candidates.
The admission portal on the IIM-N website allows candidates to upload the income and assets certificate, while also offering a window to make requisite changes.
