The coal fields burning underground in Jharkhandís Jharia for over 100 years have proved disastrous for the residents. Besides the obvious health issues, in the face of toxic air released from the burning coal fields, faced by the locals, unemployment is another issue that has been troubling the youth of Jharia, many of those are now shifted in the nearby Belgadia. Vasant, one of the locals complained of lack of employment opportunities in Belgadia and said they have to go back to Jharia to seek work. “There are no employment opportunities here; we have to go to Jharia to earn. No politician has ever come here except to ask for votes,” Vasant told ANI. Jharia Rehabilitation & Development Authority (JRDA) which was constituted in 2004-05 to rehabilitate people living in Jharia has transported nearly 2800 families in Belgadia. ìA master plan was made in 2004-05 for rehabilitation of people living in Jharia & flats were built in Belgadia, till now 2800 families have been rehabilitated, further work is underway,î said A Hasnain, Deputy Collector, JRDA.
