Porsche plans Panamera coupe, cabrio, report says

    AUTOWEEK

The Porsche Panamera coupe is expected to be based on a shortened wheelbase of the current sedan, as seen in a rendering.

If you are feeling nostalgic for the Porsche 928, good news may be on the horizon: Autocar reports that Porsche is working on coupe and cabriolet versions of the Panamera sedan, to target the likes of the BMW 8 series, among others.

The coupe and cabrio, expected in 2020, are tipped to offer 2+2 accommodations, erring closer to the 911 than larger four-seat coupes. This means Der Neue 928, as we will call it, will not tread into the luxury yacht segment occupied by the Mercedes-Benz S-class coupe, opting for something a little more nimble.

Autocar indicates that the coupe and cabrio are far along in development and will be based on existing Panamera platforms and mechanicals. This suggests that the engine lineup is likely to carry over -- the current Panamera lineup is pretty well stocked with powertrain choices.

The question is not what prompted Porsche to develop the variants, but what took Porsche so long? After all, luxury coupes and cabriolets are booming. After devoting much attention to mining the SUV and crossover segments in these last few years, Porsche is turning its attention back to pure sports cars. And while Porsche was focused on making the Macan its best-seller -- achieved easily enough -- other German automakers have been fielding large two-door models of every shape and size.

One question that remains is whether the Panamera coupe and cabrio project is related to the baby Bentley coupe once rumored to be working its way through the Volkswagen Group pipeline; both brands are owned by VW.

Bentley teased a coupe positioned below the Continental GT a few years back, as Autocar notes, and Bentley executives have hinted over time that the British marque is interested in fielding a lighter, nimbler sports car as a contrast to the large, tanklike Continental GT.

The fact that Porsche is reportedly on the cusp of launching Panamera-based coupe and cabrio twins may prompt Bentley's development of a smaller, lighter coupe to target BMW, Mercedes and Aston Martin offerings.
