A delivery man for an online food delivery company and his 62-year-old associate were arrested for allegedly robbing a 76-year-old woman in west Delhi’s Rajouri Garden last month, police said on Thursday.

Police said 34-year-old Kamal Kant barged into the elderly woman’s house wearing a helmet, held her at knife point and robbed her of ₹5.30 lakh and jewellery on April 23.

His associate, Om Prakash, allegedly stood outside to keep vigil while Kant robbed the woman.

The woman, Saroop Kaur, who stays with her son and grandson, was alone at home on the day of the incident.

Deputy commissioner of police (west) Monika Bhardwaj said that on April 23, the elderly woman answered her door bell when a man wearing a helmet overpowered her. He threatened to kill her if she raised an alarm.

“While leaving the house, the man forcibly removed three gold bangles that she was wearing and fled. A case was registered on her complaint,” said the DCP.

DCP Bhardwaj said the investigating team analysed the footage of the CCTV cameras installed in the neighbourhood. One camera helped the police identify the motorcycle the suspect used to make his getaway. A bag belonging to an online food delivery company was also noticed on the vehicle, she said.

“We contacted the company and details of 2,700 motorcycles were obtained and analysed. Our team shortlisted nine motorcycles as their model and other features matched with the vehicle seen in the footage,” said Bjardwaj.

“The photos of employees using the nine motorcycles were obtained and shown to the complainant. She identified the suspect and told us that earlier he worked as a driver in her neighbourhood,” she added. The police identified the suspect as Kamal Kant.

Police arrested Kant from his Nangloi home and recovered the knife, motorcycle, helmet that the clothes he allegedly used in the crime. He was questioned and that led to the arrest of Om Prakash from Om Vihar in Uttam Nagar and the recovery of two gold bangles.

“Prakash told us that he remained out of the woman’s house to assist Kant by keeping a watch on people entering the building during the robbery,” said Bjardwaj.
