New Delhi, The Supreme Court on Thursday declined to interfere in a petition filed by the kin of victims of the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case in which they had sought its direction not to release the convicts who were behind the killing of the former Prime Minister.
At least 14 others had been killed in the Sriperumbudur 1991 suicide bombing in which the former PM perished.
Headed by Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi, the bench dismissed the petition filed by S Abbas and many other victims.
In their petition before the apex court, they pleaded that the convicts in the assassination case should not be released.
They also sought a direction for compensation to the near and dear ones of those victims who had died in the brutal killing. “We dismiss the petition, as there is no merit in it,” the bench ruled.
The victims had resisted the Tamil Nadu government’s decision to free the convicts.
It held that the Constitution Bench had already decided this issue, ‘so we are not going to hear this petition.’
