London Irish lock in Wallaby star Coleman

    2019-05-09 12:24

Cape Town - London Irish have continued their recruitment drive since promotion to England's Premiership by announcing the signing of Adam Coleman ahead of the 2019/20 season.

Coleman is a 6-foot-8, 122kg lock who has been one of the cornerstones of the Australian national team’s pack for the past two-and-a-half years.

The first Tasmanian-born player to represent Australia since World War II, Coleman is also the son of a former Tonga international captain, Pau’u Afeaki. While his Super Rugby debut came for the Waratahs in 2011, it was after moving to Perth to join Western Force that his career ignited with a series of powerful displays in Super Rugby.

These ultimately brought his call-up to the Wallabies squad in 2016, which is where he has remained since, starting in 29 of his 31 international appearances.

Coleman moved to Melbourne to join the Rebels in 2017 but is now relishing the opportunity of testing himself in English rugby once his contractual commitments with Australia have been completed.

“I’m really looking forward to joining London Irish” he stated. “It’s been clear talking to Declan (Kidney) and Les (Kiss) that they’ve got big ambitions for the club, and as well as a good squad already in place, they are making some exciting signings as well. The plans for moving back into London look really good as well, and it will be a privilege to be a part of that journey.

“Before I move to London I’ll be fully committed to having a good Super Rugby campaign in Melbourne and hopefully helping Australia achieve success in the World Cup.”

London Irish director of rugby Declan Kidney added: “We have a strong set of forwards, but know that we need strength in depth if we want to be competitive. Adam is a quality player and we’re delighted he has chosen to come and join London Irish. We are looking forward to welcoming him to Hazelwood later in the year.”
