Close on the heels of Cyclone Fani, the East coast is experiencing a heatwave and warm winds in some of its areas. The heatwave is expected to continue for the next few days.

Hot days will also be seen in Chhattisgarh, Vidarbha, Marathwada and eastern Uttar Pradesh. However, with a western disturbance approaching India, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has also said that there will be thunderstorms across much of north and northwest India, including Delhi-NCR, and in parts of coastal Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and the Northeast.

Moisture incursion from the Arabian Sea will also influence the weather and contribute to thunderstorms, IMD said. "Heatwave to severe heatwave conditions were recorded in coastal Andhra, east Uttar Pradesh, Odisha, eest Rajasthan, Vidarbha and parts of Chhattisgarh. A western disturbance in the form of a cyclonic circulation prevails over Afghanistan and adjoining parts of Pakistan," the IMD said in its weather forecast on Thursday evening.

It added, "Dust-raising winds are very likely to prevail over Rajasthan, south Haryana, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh from Friday."

In coastal towns such as Nellore in Andhra Pradesh, maximum temperatures touched 43°C and are expected to soar to 46°C in the coming days. Private weather forecaster Skymet said that cyclones are strong features and can alter air flow over the region considerably.

"Whenever a cyclone approaches an area, all the winds get diverted towards the coast from the land. These winds from the land are much warmer," Skymet said, adding that May 13 onward, there will be pre-monsoon rainfall on the east coast.

Temperatures in coastal Odisha were in the range of 35-39°C. Following the cyclone, there has been no significant moisture incursion or cloud build-up. Satellite images however, showed light clouds over Andhra Pradesh and near the Gujarat coast.
