JAIPUR: Even as the 20-year-old gang-rape survivor and her
family were in the
Alwar SP’s office trying hard to convince IPS officer Rajeev Pachar to register their complaint on May 1, her husband’s mobile kept ringing with
extortion calls from one of the accused.
Pachar, however, did not even register the case on May 1. He now stands accused of not making efforts to track down the rapists-cum-extortionists on the basis of those phone calls.
The ordeal of the gang-rape survivor did not end after five men brutally assaulted her on April 26 but was just beginning with the policemen making it even harder for the family, as narrated to TOI by the Dalit woman’s father.

The next day we went to Alwar SP Rajiv Pachar who also did not take us seriously despite the fact that one of the accused even called while we were in the SP’s office. The police officials just kept telling us that they will catch the accused soon and we should not tell anyone about the crime so as to warn the culprits,” said the survivor’s father.
Protesters clash with police at Civil Lines in cityPachar, who was shunted out as district SP on Tuesday, claimed that he followed due procedure. He told TOI, “I immediately alerted the cyber cell to stop the videos from circulating and even asked them to track the mobile phone from which the complainant was getting the calls.”
There was delay in conducting medical examination citing lack of women medical staff. “Police were not ready to understand the brutality of the crime. We were told that there was no women medical staff to conduct my tests on my daughter on May 2 in Thanagazi. My daughter had to travel to Alwar on May 3 for the tests,” added the father.
Villagers protest at Thanagazi on WednesdaySeeing the crass attitude of the local police, the family conducted its own investigation and provided names and addresses of some of the accused to the police, but cops did not take them seriously.
The survivor’s brother-in-law told TOI, “Through my contacts, I identified few of the culprits and gave the details to the police but they just sat on the information. Till April 30 all the five men were roaming around in the area itself before absconding. Even after that, the police could have questioned their families but instead did nothing.”
The family members added that the police botched up the entire investigation and their delay resulted in the accused being free for so long even after committing such a ghastly act.
The police did not mend its way even after protests erupted across the state. When the survivor was taken before the magistrate to get her statement recorded on Wednesday, the policemen forgot to carry some vital documents, so the survivor will have to travel again on Thursday. The family is still running from pillar to post trying to get justice.
