Horror as young farm worker gets his leg stuck in machinery and needs his leg amputated at the scene after being trapped for hours

A young farm worker has lost his leg after he became stuck in a cable during a horrific accident on Thursday.

The teenager, who was working in Western Downs, had been driving a farm vehicle while towing a cable that became snagged.

The boy tried to kick it loose, but became entangled in the cable and was unable to free himself, authorities said. 

Toomwoomba RACQ LifeFlight rescuers rushed to the scene shortly after receiving an emergency call at 10.30am.

The worker remained trapped for several hours, prompting authorities to dispatch a second Lifeflight Rescue helicopter.

Doctors arrived at the scene and ultimately decided to amputate the boy's leg as he was unable to be released.

The victim was then airlifted to Princess Alexandra Hospital where he is in critical condition.

Footage of the rescue show emergency crews, including Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) and Queensland Fire and Emergency Service (QFES) firefighters tending to the scene.
