Delhi civic bodies pull down 6 lakh publicity material

Over six lakh publicity material including political posters, banners and hoardings put up on Delhi roads have been removed by civic bodies.

The three municipal corporations of Delhi have pulled down around 6.18 lakh political posters, banners, flexes, boards and hoardings of various parties put up on public roads in the city since the Model Code of Conduct for Lok Sabha Elections 2019 came into force on March 11.

The East Delhi Municipal Corporation said they had taken down the maximum number of such “poll-publicity material” at 3.4 lakh. The South Delhi Municipal Corporation stands second at 1.61 lakh and the north Delhi municipality removed about 1.17 lakh such items.

“After orders from the poll commission, we deployed all our staff from to get all poll-canvassing material removed frrom Central, West, South and Najafgarh zones,” said Radha Krishan, spokesperson, south corporation.

“The logic behind this is that voters should not be influenced on the grounds of caste, region or religion; by way of festive greetings, new schemes or offers by political parties,” a senior official of the north Delhi municipality explained. The north municipality covers Sadar-Paharganj, Rohini, Keshavpuram, Civil Lines and Karol Bagh areas.

“Months or weeks before the day of voting, people should have ann idea as to who they want to vote for. Our efforts are all aimed in that direction,” an East Delhi Municipal Corporation official said.
