Police opposed plea citing law and order

Suresh Chauhan, the man who assaulted Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal during a roadshow in Moti Nagar on May 4 was granted bail on Wednesday.

The accused who was sent to judicial custody on May 5, was produced before a magistrate where his counsel argued for a bail for his client. However, the Delhi police opposed his bail request citing law and order situation before the election. However, the magistrate granted him bail.

On May 4, following the attack, the accused was caught by AAP supporters and thrashed. Later, he was handed over to the Delhi police for further investigation. Chauhan was seen wearing an AAP sash and standing close to Mr. Kejriwal’s vehicle in Moti Nagar the day he slapped the Chief Minister.

“An FIR was registered under Sections 323 [assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty] and 153 [wantonly giving provocation with intent to cause riot] of the IPC and was sent to two days judicial custody,” said a police officer.

A police officer said that they have requested Chauhan to refrain himself from appearing on TV debates or holding any public appearance. “He was not a registered worker of AAP. During enquiry, some registered workers confirmed that he used to help organise AAP events,” said a police officer.
