Traffic cop caught on camera taking money suspended

Surat: An inquiry has been ordered by the deputy commissioner of police against an assistant sub inspector (ASI) who has been suspended after a video of him taking money without issuing receipt to a traffic offender went viral. R J Parmar asked Rs 1,000 from the complainant to issue Rs 500 receipt.

In the incident Milan Desai, a resident of Utran, was stopped near Kapodra crossroads by the ASI and asked for the scooter’s papers. Since Desai was also talking on the phone while driving, Parmar asked him to pay Rs 3,500 as fine. However, later he agreed to accept Rs 1,000.
Meanwhile, Desai who could understand that the cop was trying to hoodwink him into paying more, started recording the conversation on his mobile phone. He told Parmar that he had Rs 500 only which the latter accepted, but didn’t issue any receipt for it. When Desai asked for a receipt, Parmar demanded Rs 500 more. Desai then left the spot and submitted a complaint to senior police officials along with a video. “An inquiry had been ordered against the ASI and he was suspended,” said Satish Sharma, city police commissioner.
