CHENNAI: Police have arrested a woman and her mother for murdering her
father-in-law by setting him on fire while he was alone at home in Thiruvalangadu near Chennai.
The murdered man has been identified as Sabapathy, 65. The accused are his son Prabhakaran’s estranged wife Gayathri, 34, and her mother Kalaivani, 57.
Gayathri married Prabhakaran six years ago and the couple have a son. She estranged from him due to differences and had been living in her parents’ home for the past two years.
Prabhakaran married another woman on April 11. On hearing about this, Gayathri and her mother went to her in-laws’ house on Tuesday. Only Sabapathy was at home when they reached there.
The daughter-mother duo picked up a quarrel with Sabapathy. The duo took kerosene from his house and poured it on him while he was lying on a cot in front of his house. Gayathri lit a match stick and dropped it on him. When fire caught him, the women fled the scene.
Hearing Sabapathy’s cries, neighbours rushed to his house. They took him to Kilpauk Medical College Hospital.
Based on his dying declaration recorded by Egmore metropolitan magistrate Roselin Durai, the Kanagammachathiram police arrested Gayathri and Kalaivani.
Sabapathy died on Wednesday.
