T’puram: A 21-year-old two-wheeler rider suffered serious injuries in a
freak accident, which was caused by the carelessness of people engaged in the works of flyover here, on Wednesday night. Vijith, a resident of Apollo Colont at Pallippuram suffered injuries after iron bars, which were left carelessly on the road, pierced through his knee.
According to the police, the accident occurred around 10.30pm on Thursday in front of main gate of the
Technopark Phase I campus, where the construction of pillars of a flyover was in progress. The road narrowed down into a bottleneck here as the middle portion of the road was closed down for the works. The workers had left construction materials, including iron bars, close to the motorable road.
“The road was poorly lit and there were no reflective barricades. Hence the rider was unaware of obstacles on his way,” said
Kazhakkoottam SI S Shaji. He said that it was the responsibility of the agency that has undertaken works to adopt measures to signal the motorists. After the mishap, the police installed reflective barricades on the spot. It was the fire and rescue services personnel from Kazhakkoottam station who pulled the iron bars out of the youth’s leg before rushing him to hospital. The police are yet to register a case as they have not received any complaint yet.
On Thursday the state human rights commission took note of the incident and registered a case suo moto. The commission chairman Antony Dominic also served notices to the assistant commissioners of traffic (north) and Kazhakkoottam Cyber City subdivision to file inquiry reports on the accident within two weeks.
