Thursday Morning Sprint

It's 6:5 .... time for the morning sprint... as our team gets you up to speed on everything you need to know as you head out the door.

We start in madison this morning.... where the school board will now start their work in finding a replacement for superintendent jennifer cheatham ... who announced her resignation yesterday.

Board president mary burke told us this morning .

Cheatham plans to stay on into august to help with the transition process.

An interim superintendent is expected to be named before the end of the month.

Republicans are expected to make some major changes to governor tony evers' state budget proposal later today.

The joint finance committee is meeting to go over the state budget starting at 11 this morning.

Republicans have promised to cut out many of the governor's spending proposals ... including an expansion of medicaid and tax increases.

The state's non-partisan legislative fiscal bureau estimates that would leave the budget in a 1- point-4 billion dollar hole.

Wisconsin lawmakers are proposing a change to state laws that would allow workers to keep their cash tips, tax free.

Workers would still have to report those tips on their federal taxes ... but would not have to report them on their state tax- forms. supporters say that means -- not just more cash in their pockets... but also a possble boost for employers -- when it comes to recruiting more workers.

If it's passed ... wisconsin would be the first state in the country with a tax exemption for tips.

Low: 39 wind: n/nw 8-15 mph south korea's military says north korea has fired two short-range missiles overnight... it's the second launch in the last five days.

This comes as north korea and the u-s are stalled in thier efforts to de- nuclearize the north korean peninsula... north korea has said saturday's missiles were military exercises.

Also breaking overnight -- the pope has issued a groundbreaking law ordering all catholic priests and nuns to report sexual abuse and cover-ups by their superiors.

The new law provides whistleblower protections for anyone making a report... it also requires dioceses around the world to have a confidential reporting system in place.

President trump's oldest son is being subpoenaed to testify again in front of the senate intelligence committee for a second time.

Donald trump junior first testified for the senate committee in 20- 17.

They're continuing to look into russian interference in u-s elections ... even after the release of the mueller report.

Trump junior is reportedly considering invoking his 5th amendment rights ... or just ignoring the subpoena altogether.

For just the second time in history... lawmakers are voting to find an attorney- general in contempt of congress.

The house judiciary committee voted to hold william barr in contempt yesterday.

Meanwhile... president trump invoked executive privilege ... to prevent barr from releasing the unredacted version of the mueller report, that congress has been asking for.

If the contempt resolution passes the full house ... barr could theoretically face fines or jail time ... but that would require his own department to pursue criminal charges.

Into the channel 3 thousand alert center overnight... madison police are looking for two suspects they say jumped and robbed a man after he got out of his car while returning home.

It happened on packers avenue on the north side ... just after 10.

Police say the 23-year-old victim was pistol whipped and knocked unconscious before the two suspects got away with his backpack and personal items. anyone with information is asked to call police.

Tonight marks the return of madison's night market to downtown.

The event includes a host of vendors... from arts and crafts.... pop-up restaurants... drinks... and live music.

It's the 3-rd year madison has put on its night markets... they run once a month through september.

Gilman street will be shut down for folks to come out, enjoy music and browse vendors... starting at 6 p-m and running until 10.

It's graduation weekend here in madison... and as students flip their tassles and throw their hats this saturday... they'll join a community of more than 440- thousand living badger alumni.

As new uw- madison graduates... young adults will have access to a variety of resources.

The wisconsinsin alumni association offers job and networking resources to help them kick off their careers.

And the graduation festivities kick off tomorrow... with the doctoral and medical professional degree ceremony at the kohl center.

The campus-wide commencement is at camp randall saturday at noon.
