Mysuru: The Mysuru City Corporation’s plans to set up a modern animal
waste processing unit at the sewage
plant has met with opposition from two former mayors — one of them from Congress, the ruling party.
The plant has been planned to process the waste into bio-gas, compost and high-protein powder for dogs and aquatic creatures. However, two former mayors BL Bhyrappa and Purushotham have urged the corporation commissioner to immediately withdraw the proposal.
Everyday more than 10 tonnes of
animal waste gets generated from hotels and slaughter houses in the city but not processed. The waste is transported to Kesare where it is buried at a depth of 15ft. In this regard
MCC is planning to consult a private firm in Chennai which has set up chicken
processing unit.
MCC requires 4,500 square metres land to set up the plant. The officials have identified two places — Rayanakere and Vidyaranyapuram where MCC owns five acres of land.
Bhyrappa and Purushotham have opposed the choice of place. “Already people Vidyaranyapuram are facing a lot of inconvenience due to the sewage farm. If the proposed animal waste processing plant comes up, it will be a nightmare for residents. The commissioner should immediately withdraw the proposal to set up the plant here,” Bhyrappa said.
Purushotham said, “Corporation commissioner Shilpa Nag, who took charge recently, has taken this sudden decision without bringing it to the notice of elected representatives. She can’t take such decisions. Immediately she should drop the proposal. She should discuss the issue with corporators before taking it further.”
