Collector J. Jayakanthan has banned the manjuvirattu scheduled to be held at Karisalpatti village in the Singampunari block on May 10, following a warning from the district police that the event would pose a threat to law and order in the area.
Acting on a report from Superintendent of Police T. Jayachandran, the Collector on Wednesday issued an order banning the event and warned of stern action against the locals and bull owners if they organise the event in violation of the order.
The local tahsildar, who visited the locality, said the arena for the manjuvirattu was located in the midst of a residential area, and suggested that permission be denied for the event.
Pointing out that a section of villagers was opposed to the event, the Superintendent of Police said in his report that the event would pose a law and order problem.
The Collector accepted the recommendations and directed the revenue and police officials to take steps to maintain law and order and ensure that the manjuvirattu does not take place on May 10.
