Thiruvananthapuram: The district unit of the Indian medical association (IMA) has decided to set up breast feeding kiosks in public places in the city. Initially, kiosks will be set up on the platforms of the Central railway station.
“The railways have agreed to provide us the space and they have also agreed to take care of the maintenance of the kiosks,” said Dr R C Sreekumar of IMA, Thiruvananthapuram.
The IMA also had discussions with KSRTC and city corporation officials to set up such kiosks at Thampanoor bus station and at Museum compound. “The only problem is the maintenance of these kiosks since hygiene needs to be ensured inside them. We are having discussions with the authorities in this regard. So far only the railways have agreed to take care of the maintenance,” he said.
The IMA is also in discussion with the state police department to ensure that proper security is given to the kiosks.
“At night the kiosks can be misused by miscreants. Hence we had discussions with the state police chief on ensuring proper security,” said Sreekumar.
Each kiosk will cost Rs 1.4 lakh and messages on the importance of breast feeding will be displayed on them. The IMA is planning to set up such kiosks in most crowded places in the city.
