Green tribunal forms panel to carry out inspections; seeks action-taken report within 2 months

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has directed the Delhi Pollution Control Committee to look into a plea alleging illegal operation of PVC units in Narela.

A Bench headed by NGT chairperson Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel constituted a committee comprising officials of the DPCC, North Delhi District Magistrate and the North Delhi Municipal Corporation to carry out inspections.

The directions came while the green panel was hearing a plea moved by residents of the Kamruddin Nagar village in Narela.

The plea claimed that despite the civic body sealing some units, several others involved in the manufacturing of PVC grinders and so on, was operational.

Directing the committee to carry out a probe into the matter, the Bench said, “Let the joint committee take appropriate action in accordance with the law and furnish a factual and action-taken report in the matter within two months…the nodal agency will be the DPCC for coordination and compliance.”

The Bench further added, “Needless to say that the order of the NGT is binding as a decree of court and non-compliance is actionable by way of punitive action including prosecution in terms of the NGT Act, 2010.”

The plea had sought removal of “three-phase electricity connections” to prevent the operation of the PVC units which are allegedly contributing to air pollution.
